NaCCA Withdraws “Our World and Our People” (OWOP) Curriculum from Basic Schools Effective 2024–2025 Academic Year
Starting from the 2024–2025 academic year, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has announced the withdrawal of the “Our World and Our People” (OWOP) curriculum for basic schools. This decision, effective immediately, follows a request made through the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, aligning with Article 103 of the 1992 Constitution and Order 250 of the Standing Orders of Parliament.
The Ghana Publishers Association (GPA) supported NaCCA’s decision on June 21, 2024, following extensive research and stakeholder consultations regarding the removal of the OWOP curriculum. Mr. Mathew Owusu, Deputy Director-General of Technical Services at NaCCA, publicly announced the decision, noting that a committee overseeing the process has issued a roadmap for the withdrawal, including the cessation of associated approved textbooks.
Although the removal will be implemented from the 2024–2025 academic year through the 2025–2026 academic year, the OWOP textbooks will continue to be used as supplementary reading materials beyond this period.
The OWOP subject was introduced as part of the Common Core Curriculum in 2019 for learners from KG1 to Basic 6 and has been studied for at least five years.
This decision means that publishers who heavily invested in OWOP materials will need to shelf these books, as schools will no longer recommend them for learners starting from the 2024–2025 academic year, despite their designation as supplementary readers by NaCCA.
