Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, recently announced ambitious targets for the company’s artificial intelligence products, including self-driving software and the use of humanoid robots in factories. However, he acknowledged that he has been overly optimistic in the past.

During an earnings briefing, Musk revealed that Tesla is in early discussions with a major automaker to license its full self-driving (FSD) technology. He firmly believes that once regulators approve self-driving capabilities, the value of Tesla vehicles will experience the most significant step change in history. Additionally, Musk expressed excitement about Tesla robots, which are currently in the pilot phase. He expects these robots to play a crucial role on Tesla’s factory floors as early as next year, although the company has only built about ten prototypes so far.

Despite the challenges posed by rising interest rates and increased competition from other electric vehicle manufacturers, Musk emphasized that Tesla will continue focusing on expanding sales volume, even if it affects profit margins. He firmly believes in the long-term value of FSD, stating that autonomy will eventually make any short-term setbacks seem insignificant.

The decision to license Tesla’s technology comes after numerous disappointments from other companies attempting to develop self-driving software. Ark Invest’s Tasha Keeney commented on Twitter that autonomy is an extremely complex task requiring vast amounts of data, and many automakers may fail to achieve it on their own.

Tesla has made substantial progress in its FSD development, completing over 300 million miles in the beta version, with more than half achieved in the past quarter alone, as revealed in an earnings presentation. Despite this progress, Musk admitted to being more cautious this time, acknowledging that his past predictions about achieving full self-driving have been overly optimistic. He compared himself to “the boy who cried FSD,” but despite his uncertainties, he remains hopeful that Tesla’s self-driving capabilities will surpass human abilities by the end of this year. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that he might be wrong once again.
