Examinations Scheduled from August 19 to September 20 with Enhanced Security Measures in Place
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) commenced the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates on Monday, August 19, 2024, with both practical and theory papers. This follows the completion of the Visual Art Project work from August 5 to 16, 2024. The examination period is set to conclude on Friday, September 20, 2024.
This year, a total of 460,611 candidatesβcomprising 212,954 males and 247,657 females from 1,003 schoolsβhave registered for the examination. This represents a 2.66% increase compared to the 2023 enrollment of 448,674 candidates. The exams are being conducted across 1,000 centers nationwide.
In a recent statement, WAEC assured all stakeholders and the public that robust security measures are in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination. However, the Council has raised concerns about potential widespread cheating attempts. Intelligence reports suggest that:
1. In certain areas, candidates are being asked to pay between GHΒ’200.00 and GHΒ’500.00 to receive unauthorized assistance from invigilators.
2. There are plans in some centers to assign teachers to invigilate subjects they currently teach.
3. Some schools have registered individuals who are not genuine students.
WAEC has issued a stern warning to Heads of Schools, Supervisors, and Invigilators to refrain from engaging in such practices, stating that anyone found guilty will face strict disciplinary action in accordance with examination regulations. The Council will not hesitate to nullify the registrations of such candidates, and any unauthorized individuals who manage to participate in the exams will have their results canceled if detected. Additionally, examination centers found to be in violation of the rules will be relocated to WAEC-designated centers.
The Council calls on all stakeholders, particularly supervisors and invigilators, to help uphold the integrity of the examination. Candidates are urged to adhere strictly to the examination regulations and to be cautious of rogue websites that circulate fake questions, which could divert their attention from genuine preparation.
WAEC extends its best wishes to all candidates and emphasizes that success can be achieved through honest effort without resorting to cheating.
